Russia praised the Hungarian government

The Kremlin has expressed its gratitude to Hungary for what it says is its sovereign position on a number of issues within the EU, Reuters reports.

The Kremlin on Monday hailed Hungary for taking a “sovereign position” on a number of issues within the European Union amid a €7.5 billion funding dispute between Budapest and Brussels.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in a conference call with journalists that

Russia was monitoring developments with Hungary after the European Commission over the weekend proposed suspending part of its funding to Budapest over the country’s corruption cases.

The Hungarian government has previously made several attempts to block EU sanctions against Russia.
